N7,000 a month? How do we enforce minimum wage in Nigeria?

I ran into a woman this week who earns N7,000 a month at restaurant in Surulere. She's required to resume by 8 in the morning and close at 8pm everyday, Monday to Saturday. She lives in Orile, which means she pays transport to get from her house to work every day. She told me that her boss gives her N200 every week as transport allowance. And she feels lucky!

I asked her why do you do this job, how can N7,000 help you survive in a month? And her reply was;

"N7,000 small? Many of the people wey I know no dey even earn reach N5,000 for one month. My small sister dey work for supermarket dey earn N4,000. Where I dey live people dey roam about they beg money wey dem go take buy food chop. Some people no dey even see N50 for one week. With my salary I go buy food stuff put for house for my pikin dem. I no dey too spend money for transport because I dey wake up early to trek reach (she mentioned the place - can't remember) from there I take bus reach Bode Thomas. And I dey collect N200 every week, so that one sef dey help."

I was amazed at how satisfied she was with earning that amount of money and surviving well on it, especially with two kids. But isn't the minimum wage in Nigeria supposed to be N18,000? There are millions of Nigerians who earn way less than that. Is there something that can be done about it? Is the Nigerian minimum wage applicable to private business owners or just government workers?

Ejigbo Women Assault: 1 Victim Confirmed Dead, Perpetrators Were OPC Members!

It has now been confirmed that one of the ladies who was brutally tortured by some men in Ejigbo Lagos in 2013 has died.

 

ChannelsTV reports that the woman who was identified as Julie was said to have been brought from her home town in Topa, Badagry to work as a canteen attendant.

It was also gathered that three women were tortured and not two as seen in the videos. 
The third woman is the mother of the two ladies shown in the video.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Is Considering Running For President In 2015

While trying to deny a Daily Sun Newspaper report that he was in the APC Vice Presidential race, Governor Rochas, in a press release, instead made public that he was considering running for President come 2015. According to the press release: Against the backdrop of SunNews' report, the Imo State government wishes to put the record straight with regard to the ambition of the Imo State Governor in 2015. And to also correct the impression that the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is in the race for the Vice-Presidential slot of the APC, as the Daily Sun caption had suggested. The truth of the matter is that Governor Okorocha is not in the VP race in APC. There has been unprecedented pressure on the governor by Nigerians from all walks of life to vie for the Presidency and he has been consulting on that. His consultations have not been on the VP slot but on the presidency and at the end of the consultations, he would decide whether to throw his hat into the ring for the presidential race or not. The pressure is also on the Imo governor by well meaning citizens of Imo State, including the artisans, farmers, traders, students, etal in the state to ensure the completion of the transformation he has begun in the state by seeking re-election in 2015. And the governor is also yet to decide on that. However, it is also good that the stakeholders said to have met according to the Daily Sun story where the name of the governor was mentioned for the VP race must have seen the qualities in him and what his administration has been doing in Imo that made them to consider him for the VP position. Glo/CAF Awards: John Mikel Obi to fly to Lagos in Chelsea jet

The Glo/CAF African Player of the Year Award 2014 will hold tomorrow Thursday January 9th at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos and one of its nominees, Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi, will be specially flown into Lagos for the ceremony in a jet provided by his club, Chelsea.

Governor Rochas Okorocha's first daughter welcomes twins

The governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has become a grandfather for the first time after his first daughter, Uloma Okorocha Nwosu, welcomed twins in December 2013. Uloma married Uche Nwosu, a serving commissioner in her father's cabinet in January 2013. The twins with Uloma's siblings above.

Uloma Nwosu is the Director General of her fathers foundation, Rochas Okorocha Foundation while her husband is the Honorable Commissioner for Land Survey and Urban planning in Imo State.

A terrible accident occurred earlier today Tuesday January 7th on 3rd Mainland Bridge that left at least one person dead. The accident involved a Black Prado SUV (pictured above) that reportedly lost its tyres while on high speed. Two people were in the car at the time of the accident, with one of them reportedly dying on the spot. The other passenger is in critical condition in the hospital. The accident caused heavy traffic on both lanes several hours ago.
